Outside our window, filled with morning, high summer, and a breeze, sheep bleated below the barn, as one of Cronin’s companions led his herd up the grass-and bramble-edged path to their cliff-side pasturage.

Waking between Nivek and Neoptolomus, Cronin yawns and sleepily mumbles about joining his friend to go off with the herd; but he stays for another two and a half hours in their bed — and five more orgasms among the three. Nivek is pleased. Neoptolomus takes that as sign he has made the proper decision to quit the villa.

After bread, juice, fruit, and cheese, with Cronin, Nivek, and Osudh in the villa’s garden, Neoptolomus tells Cronin he will secure the boy a junior officer’s position in the army, if he wishes. Cronin is old enough, now, to start his own adventures out in the world. Eagerly an excited Cronin agrees. Neoptolomus tells his steward to see to it — while Nivek and Osudh entreat the youth to remain pox-free till his regiment is far from Rome, where such unhappiness is less likely to mar the pleasures of women and men.

With Nivek and Osudh — who is returning to Rome at an invitation from a lady at court to lend her poetic talents to that elegant house — Neoptolomus returns to the eternal city, where the poet, on saying her good-byes, exhorts them, finally, if they will not tell them to her, to keep the secrets of the phallos from everyone. While, as he has done before, Nivek protests they know nothing, Neoptolomus only smiles.

On arriving, they receive news that Neoptolomus’s Roman patron and employer has fallen ill and quit Rome for his summer estate on Syracuse: Nivek and Neoptolomus continue, now by boat, to the beautiful Mediterranean island.

The concluding narrative movement of Phallos — its final three chapters — begins:

Let me recount one more incident with my partner and lover, Nivek.
